Why is it important for dads to read to their children?

Dads have a big influence on their children's future academic achievement and success as readers. Researchers have found that children are more likely to thrive—emotionally and academically—if they have a warm, nurturing relationship with their dad, a relationship that encourages reading, conversation, and play. It’s important to know that it is never too early—and it’s never too late!—for dads to get actively involved in the cognitive and emotional development of their children. The payoff is immediate and ongoing.

With Especially for Dads, dads and other male caregivers gain skills and strategies for reading and talking with children. Children are more successful when they hear sophisticated vocabulary, when they have conversations with adults in the home and when they have cognitively challenging experiences. And research shows that children do significantly better in school when their dads share meals, play with them, talk with them, help them with homework or read with them.
