Participants interviewed by RMC Research Corp. said:

“ ...the guide had all the information in it. It was very easy to refer back to it, to get the information, to get ideas.”

“At first I was thinking of Social Studies as this little box of things, like our community, maps or people. Now I have broadened that out to also include social interactions in our classroom, the rules of the classroom and children’s feelings.”

Why Mother Goose Cares About Social Studies and who benefits from this program?

Very simply, social studies is the study of people and how they live. Children are natural social studies researchers. Children begin to understand the world by learning about themselves, their families, friends, and the local and global community. This literature-based program integrates the standards for social studies and language and literacy into the everyday experience in an early childhood setting.

Adults who work with children ages three to seven in formal and informal educational settings will benefit from Mother Goose Cares About Social Studies. This begins a cascade of learning that reaches all of the children they work with, as well as the children’s families.

Does Mother Goose Cares About Social Studies really make a difference?

RMC Research Corp. found that educators trained in Mother Goose Cares About Social Studies showed increased frequency of teaching social studies standards, increased competence in introducing social studies, language and literacy-based explorations, and more frequent communications with families, a critical component of effective education. What do people say?

Are the programs research-based?

The Mother Goose Cares Programs are based on scientific research that informs today’s best practice and stresses the positive impact high quality child-care settings can have on children’s cognitive, and social and emotional development. Many studies have established that high-quality early care and education lay the foundation for children’s school success (U.S. Department of Education. Start Early, Finish Strong: How to Help Every Child Become a Reader, 1999).

What standards does the program rely on?

Mother Goose Cares About Social Studies is based on nationally-recognized social studies, language and literacy standards. The social studies standards created by the National Council for the Social Studies have been revised to meet the developmental needs of children ages three to seven. The language and literacy standards have been created by synthesizing recommendations made by the leading experts in the field.
