Why Mother Goose Cares About Math and Science and who benefits from this program? Young children have an interest in and an ability to learn the fundamental concepts of math and science. Understanding of the process skills of science, such as observing, predicting and classifying, and basic mathematical concepts such as numeracy, spatial sense, patterns and measurement increases young children’s ability to make sense of the world and to succeed in school. Children also benefit from having had numerous experiences with books, from having in-depth conversations about books and the topics they present and from having hands-on experience with scientific investigations.
Does Mother Goose Cares About Math and Science really make a difference? RMC Research Corp. found that educators who successfully implemented Mother Goose Cares About Math and Science applied what they learned in the program and used nearly three times as many math and science activities in their daily work with children than they had before the program. Children in the care of these educators demonstrated greater knowledge of math, science and literacy concepts.
Are the programs research-based? The programs are based on scientific research that informs today’s best practice and stresses the positive impact high quality child-care settings can have on children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. Many studies have established that high-quality early care and education lay the foundation for children’s school success (U.S. Department of Education. Start Early, Finish Strong: How to Help Every Child Become a Reader, 1999).
What standards does the program rely on? Mother Goose Cares About Math and Science is based in nationally recognized standards, such as those published by National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, National Research Council, Head Start Bureau, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The curriculum has been developed with the guidance of an advisory panel of top scientists, mathematicians and educators in the United States. You can find the list of standards used in the development of Mother Goose Cares About Math and Science here.
Is any special training required? Research Corp. found that the curriculum and materials are easy to use, relevant and current, and reflect best practice in instructional design. However, to arrange a group training for community professionals, please contact us.
