The Red Clover Award promotes the reading and discussion of the best of contemporary picture books in nearly all of Vermont's elementary schools. Each year over 20,000 K-4 students read, or have read to them, the ten nominated books (download list).

The Red Clover Award is co-sponsored by the Vermont Center for the Book / Mother Goose Programs, the Vermont Department of Libraries and the Vermont Agency of Education.

 

 

...The World's Greatest Lion! With 189 schools and four public libraries reporting, that's this year's Red Clover Award winner. The World's Greatest Lion received 7,617 votes, Brothers at Bat got 3,391 and Goldlilocks and the Three Dinosaurs received 3,185. For a complete vote tally, email us.

Save the date! The fall Red Clover conference will take place on October 8 wih author/illustrator David Macaulay keynoting and author Leda Schubert providing the endnote. New this year: Every conference registree will receive a FREE copy of The Red Clover Award educator resource manual.

Remember: in order to be eligible, your school must be a Vermont elementary school that participates in the Red Clover program and complete an evaluation form. The current Red Clover Educator Resource Guide is available by calling 802-875-2751, ext. 107 (to order using a credit card) or mail your check for $31 (includes shipping) to Vermont Center for the Book, P.O. Box 423, Chester, VT 05143. A receipt will be included in the package.

While our website is under (re)construction, nominees for the 2014-2015 award are posted on the VT Department of Libraries website.

Most of the activities in the new guide are based on the Vermont Framework of Standards (and the new Common Core State Standards) and provide dynamic and thoughtful learning experiences for children. Extending the discussions and activities will help to address even more.
